Katsura: The Photographs of Ishimoto Yasuhiro

The exhibit Katsura: The Photographs of Ishimoto Yasuhiro opens Thursday, February 18 in the Kemper Room on the upper level of Galvin Library. Sponsored by art@iit, this show continues IIT’s fascinating series of art exhibits that have attracted attention all over the city.

From IIT Today: “Ishimoto Yasuhiro studied with Aaron Siskind and Harry Callahan at the Institute of Design. In 1953, Ishimoto began photographing the Katsura Imperial Villa, which was built in Kyoto in the seventeenth century for the Japanese Imperial Family. Its buildings and gardens are created in a simple yet elegant style that has had an effect on many modern architects such as Bruno Taut. The 50 images in the exhibition, which is curated by Susan Aurinko, are from the book Katsura, published in 1960 by Ishimoto.”

An opening reception for the exhibit will be held from 4:30 pm – 7:00 pm in the Kemper Room on Thursday, February 25. The reception will feature remarks by George Hisaeda, Consul General of Japan and a gallery talk by Institute of Design Professor John Grimes.

The exhibit runs through March 7, and is open any time the library is open (library hours).
