Why are you encountering black screens in place of web sites that normally provide you with information? January 18th has been chosen as a protest day to raise awareness about two bills presently making their way through the US Congress: the Stop Online Piracy Act in the House of Representatives (H.R. 3261) and the Protect IP Act in the Senate (S.968).

By all appearances the bills, SOPA and PIPA, look like they will be used to curb piracy online, but in reality many sites that feature user-generated content like Reddit, Wikipedia and others may not be able to continue business as usual if this bill passes. You can read more about the protest and the bills here.

The Chicago Tribune has a story about Wikipedia’s choice to go dark and if you would like to see some of the sites that are going dark in solidarity with the protest, including Google, reddit, Mozilla, WordPress, O’Reilly Media, and more, read the list here.

One site protesting that the Illinois academic library community would draw attention to is the Internet Archive. Located at www.archive.org, the Internet Archive contains all of the items that have been digitized through the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) Book Digitization Initiative, including items from IIT. Those items will be unavailable for at least 12 hours on January 18, and visitors will be redirected to a basic announcement. For more information, visit the Internet Archive blog.

Undergraduate textbooks are available for use inside the library for two hours at a time. You need to bring the call number of the textbook you want to use to the Circulation Desk on the lower level. There are two fast and simple ways to find the call numbers of your textbooks.

1. If you know the name of the textbook: enter the title in the search box on our homepage. Choose to search by title and click search. You can write down the call number from the main catalog screen:

tip: write the call number on your syllabus so you don't have to look it up again.

Click on the title to learn more about the specific book, such as the edition number. There is also an option to text yourself the call number, which is a great way to ensure you’ll have the correct number with you.

a status of 'available' or 'recently checked in' means the book can be used. Books already in use will list the time they are due.

2. If you know the course number or the professor, but not the name of the textbook: go to http://library.iit.edu/reserves and search by course number or professor to see a complete list of books. Some courses have several professors, so pick the correct one from the list:

Enter your course number to find a list of textbooks for the course.

To learn more, watch this short video, read this quick PDF or see our textbook policies. If you tried both methods and still can’t find the call numbers you need, ask us!

A special thank-you to the Class of 2011 for choosing Galvin Library’s textbook collection for the 2011 Class Gift! The monies donated will support purchasing selected textbooks for both fall and spring semesters.

The OTS Support Desk will continue to provide online, telephone and in-person service to the university community. Stop by and visit the new space, located on the upper level near the main stairway, and right next door to the elevator. All other means of contacting the Support Desk will remain the same:
