Over the summer the American Psychological Association released its long-awaited 6th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. The manual is used in psychology and many other disciplines at IIT. It is a vital text for students in those disciplines who are writing a research paper, thesis or dissertation. The first printing of the manual contained multiple errors, so the APA released a second printing on November 2nd. Some of the errors were style errors, so it is extremely important that students and faculty who use APA style have the second printing of the manual. Read more about the situation at Inside Higher Ed.

Galvin Library has the error-free second printing of the 6th edition. The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association is available in the Reference collection on the upper level. The call number is REF.BF76.7.P832010.

If you purchased a copy that contains errors you should read the APA’s FAQ on the reprint and check their PDF of corrections. The APA is offering exchanges, but it appears that the exchanges are dependent upon many factors. Find out if you can return your copy and get a new one by calling the APA at 1-800-374-2721.

See what other reference resources we have for psychology at the Psychology Research Guide. Contact Jannelle Ruswick, the Librarian for Psychology and the Social Sciences, if you have any questions.

First mentioned in the fall library newsletter Booklines, the Galvin Library will make an effort to have a copy of every undergraduate textbook on reserve for every course offered during fall 2009 and spring 2010. Textbooks that are in the library’s collection are held in the Reserve Collection, which is located behind the circulation desk on the lower level. Reserve books can only be checked out for two hours at a time and cannot be removed from the library, which ensures they are available to as many students as possible during the semester they are assigned. You can find more information on the library’s reserves page or by watching a short video.

The library is currently just a few textbooks shy of having ALL fall textbooks but undergraduate students can find a copy of the textbook they need now @ Galvin Library. To borrow a reserve textbook, you will need the call number of the text so staff at the circulation desk can retrieve your item. Search for your textbook in the online catalog by course number, instructor name or department.

Not sure what a call number is or how the library uses call numbers to organize its collections? Check out this handy how-to guide.

BARBARA CRANE THEN / NOW
the eternal thread of the ID aesthetic
September 10, 2009 – February 1, 2010

Opening reception and lecture: Thursday, September 10: 4:30 – 7 pm

The exhibit Barbara Crane Then/Now opens Thursday, September 10 in the Kemper Room on the upper level of Galvin Library. Sponsored by art@iit, this show continues IIT’s fascinating series of art exhibits that have attracted attention all over the city.

From art@iit: “Barbara Crane is an MA graduate of the Institute of Design (‘66) where she began the unique and pioneering techniques that still mark her work today. Crane was a recipient of Guggenheim and Illinois Arts council grants, 2 NEA grants, and numerous other awards and grants. She was a professor at SAIC from 1967–1995, and has had over 75 solo exhibitions in museums and galleries. Her work is contained in collections in the U.S., Japan, France, Greece, and Germany.

“The concepts Crane learned at ID are still a driving force for her today; strong individuality and purity of form is stressed in Crane’s work, about which she said, in 2002, ‘The issues in my work are often of a similar nature with an abstract edge. Though I build on past experience, I attempt to eradicate previous habits of seeing and thinking. I keep searching for what is visually new to me while always hoping that a fusion of form and content will take place.’”

An opening reception for the exhibit will be held from 4:30 pm – 7:00 pm in the Kemper Room on Thursday, September 10. The exhibit runs through February 1, and is open any time the library is open (library hours). For more on this and other exhibits, see the art@iit site.

The Galvin Library, and its branch libraries, switched over to a new online catalog interface this summer. It has a new look, improved search speed and additional functionality, such as user tags and comments. There is also a feature called faceting, which is a way to narrow your search results by a specific subject, author, location, language and more.

For returning students, faculty and staff, this catalog requires that you create a new, personalized login name and password. It will use your library borrower ID to link your new account to your existing library account. In order to link correctly, the new user account page will ask for the following information:

Bar code – your bar code is your IIT ID number that is on the front of your IIT ID card

Last Name – the last name listed on your IIT ID card

Library – Illinois Institute of Technology

In the “Basic Information” section of the new user account page, you can choose your own user name and password. You can also choose to send information to an e-mail account other than your IIT e-mail address. Click here to create your new account.

**Keep in mind that the library uses ONLY your IIT email account to send notification emails regarding your requested materials.

If you prefer to use the previous online catalog interface, simply click on the “Classic Search” button in the upper right-hand of the catalog screen.

Questions? You can always contact the reference desk

If you need a copy of a textbook to take home to your dorm room or apartment, you’ll need to purchase it from the campus bookstore or from another source. The library does not provide circulating copies of textbooks for students. The Galvin Library collection is intended to provide materials for scholarly research and to supplement classroom learning.

The library may have a copy of your textbook, but if so, it has been placed in the Reserve Collection, located behind the Circulation Desk on the Lower Level of the library. Reserve books can only be checked out for two hours at a time and cannot be removed from the library. This ensures they are available to as many students as possible during the semester they are assigned. Books owned by the Library which are later adopted as class textbooks will be transferred to the Reserve Collection during the time they are assigned for class use.

Textbooks are also not available via Interlibrary Loan (ILL). If you place an ILL request for a textbook via I-Share or WorldCat, it will be canceled by library staff. To prevent the loss of valuable study time, please consider purchasing a new or used textbook.

To search for Reserve titles, use the IIT Library Catalog. Items on Reserve will have a location of “Galvin Reserves (IIT-Local Circulating Only)” in the item record. To borrow these items, bring the call number to the Circulation Desk on the lower level. Again, Reserve books can only be checked out for two hours at a time and cannot be removed from the library.

For more on the library’s textbook policy, click here.
