The Night Owl Lab, IIT’s overnight computer lab, is now open for the spring semester. You can find the Night Owl Lab on the lower level of the library Sunday through Thursday nights, from 11pm to 7am. There is no Night Owl Lab on Fridays or Saturdays.

What’s in the Night Owl Lab?
There will be 50 laptops equipped with OTS computer lab software that you can use overnight in the library. It will also have remote printing (black and white only). A map of the open space and more information can be found on our 24 hour access page. Additional information can also be found on the OTS Night Owl Lab page.

But wait! That’s not all! Not only will the Night Owl Lab be available to you overnight, but so will many of the most popular features of Galvin Library:
• scanners
• copiers
• vending machines
• a variety of seating options from beanbags to traditional chairs
• group and quiet study space
• access to the reserve textbook collection

Schedule for Sunday through Thursday nights:
• 6:00pm: Show your IIT ID card to a staff member at the Circulation Desk.
• 9:00pm: Hold your IIT ID card up to the card reader outside the main doors to get inside.
• 11:00pm: The Night Owl Lab opens on the lower level. The upper level of the library closes. No upper level resources or services are available from 11pm to 8:30am.
• 7:00am Access to Night Owl Lab laptops ends, but the rest of the lower level services are still available.
• 8:30am The upper level opens.
Important! No IIT ID = no entry from 6pm to 8:30am.

The easiest way to know what is open before heading to Galvin is to check Current hours for the upper level and lower level are posted just underneath the question mark in the right column. Use Ask A Librarian to contact us with any questions.

Citation Management Workshop Friday January 14

January 4, 2011 at 4:54 pm | Posted in classes, instruction, workshops | Comments Off on Citation Management Workshop Friday January 14

The Citation Management Cure
Friday, January 14
Galvin Library, Library Learning Center
Free. Register here.

Do you suffer from Lost Citation Syndrome? Consider the following scenario:

It’s the day before a paper is due, and you have the perfect quote you want to use but can’t remember which article you found it in. You can either lose precious time redoing your database searches or lose the quote. By the time you find the article, you have one hour and 15 citations to input into your bibliography before the paper is due. If only you had known about citation organizers before you got in this mess!

Now there’s hope for Lost Citation Syndrome sufferers. Let the library help you by attending a workshop Friday, January 14th. Our Digital Services Librarian, Christine McClure, will show you a variety of citation management tools that allow you to save, organize, annotate and export your citations as you work. She’ll talk about databases such as Ebsco that have their own organizers to larger multi-platform organizers like EndNote and Zotero. It doesn’t matter if your paper is 3 pages or 300 – this class will save you time and reduce panic and frustration.

Email with any questions. Add GalvinInstruction to your Google Calendar so you won’t miss any upcoming workshop.
