Are you a new student at IIT?  Learn how to use the library with our Librarian Yi Han.  She will tell you everything you need to know that can get you started including:

  • how to search and find books in our library
  • how to use interlibrary loan and borrow from other libraries
  • how to reserve a study room
  • where to find articles

The library orientation will be offered two times, Tuesday August 28th and Wednesday August 29th from 12:50 pm to 1:20 pm.  Meet in the Library Learning Center, which is located in Galvin Library on the lower level, just past the circulation desk.  Library Map  Let us know you are coming by registering at  Registering is useful for our preparation, but is not required.

Galvin Library offers classes throughout the year on using library resources.  See our blog post on how to add the Galvin Library calendar of classes and events to your list of Google calendars.  Remember you can always get help, any time with any question, by contacting us through email, phone, IM or just stop by the Research Help Office, located on the upper level at the top of the main stairwell.

You can keep track of upcoming classes and events at Galvin Library by adding the Galvin Library Events Calendar to your list of Google Calendars.  Adding the Calendar is easy. Go the calendar page first:  Then click   at the bottom right corner of the page.

You will see the Galvin Library Events Calendar in your Other Calendars list.  If you don’t want to see the calendar all the time, you can easily hide it by clicking on the name of the calendar.  Clicking on it again will make the calendar reappear.

Now you won’t miss out on helpful research workshops and library announcements–they’re always in your calendar!

Hathi Trust Digital Library

1.2 million e-books now available to IIT students, faculty, & staff.

Galvin Library now provides seamless access to more than 1.2 million e-books digitized by the Hathi Trust (pronounced hah-tee). These books can be searched and accessed through the library’s standard book search interface. The Hathi Trust digital library covers all subject areas, but is particularly strong in non-scientific and non-technical areas, complementing the library’s own e-book  and traditional print book collection.

The Hathi Trust is a cooperative digital library formed in 2008 between thirteen university libraries. The content was digitized by Google, the Internet Archive, and Microsoft, as well as various library initiatives.

Finding Financial Aid Resources in the Library

Paying for CollegeNew, updated editions of essential financial aid resources for students are available at Galvin Library.  In cooperation with the university’s financial aid department, the library has more than 20 titles available that can be easily accessed in the Reference collection located on the upper level.  For assistance in locating the materials, the Reference Desk is staffed at all hours the library is open or use this map.

Financing higher education has never been easy and the current economy has placed added strains on families and individuals who seek advanced education in an effort to broaden their future opportunities.  Grants, awards, and scholarships for students of all backgrounds, qualifications and demographics are available to be researched at the library.  Financial assistance for women, Hispanic-, Native-, and Asian-Americans, veteran’s families, and those with disabilities are featured titles, as well as titles such as Paying for College without Going Broke, Debt-Free U, and the Ultimate Scholarship Book 2011.  IIT students can find a wealth of materials in Galvin Library and assistance with additional questions concerning financial aid can be found in the university’s Financial Aid Office located in Main Building, office 104.
