FDR Lecture on Wednesday

The Center for Disability Resources and Paul V. Galvin Library are co-sponsoring a lecture by Richard Harris, Director Emeritus of Disabled Student Development at Ball State on Wednesday, October 24 from 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm in the Siegel Hall Auditorium.

FDR: Elected in Spite of or Because of his Disability?” will utilize rare pictures and video as Harris explores FDR’s “splendid deception” and shares how FDR’s disability influenced his leadership style. Severely disabled by polio in 1921, Franklin Delano Roosevelt went on to serve two terms as governor of New York and 12 years as President of the United States. Harris argues that FDR was elected because of and not in spite of his disability, and he asks what consequences does the FDR story have for today’s complex disability conditions? In this election season, this should be a close-up and fascinating look at our 32nd President of the United States.

Open Access (OA) is a growing international movement that uses the Internet to throw open the locked doors that once hid knowledge. It encourages the unrestricted sharing of research results with everyone. We propose to Set the Default to Open Access.

In order to generate awareness of these issues and to support the goals of the OA movement, we will be taking part in International Open Access Week. International Open Access week is October 22-28, 2012.

Galvin Library and the IIT Open Access Student Advocacy Group are sponsoring 2 events this year on topics related to the OA movement.

On Monday, October 22 during lunchtime at the MTCC Bridge and at the Circulation Desk in Galvin Library you can play the “Guess the cost” game.

Have you ever pondered how much of your tuition is being spent so you can access scholarly articles, databases, and journals? Or how much you would have to pay if you were not a student? Guess correctly, and you could win up to a $25 Amazon gift certificate.

On Wednesday, October 24 in Room 102 in Engineering 1, 2 of our librarians, Dana Lamparello and John Dorr will be devlivering an Author’s Rights Info Session.

Publishing your work is an important part of being involved in the academic world. Come to our info session to learn about your rights as an author. Refreshments will be provided.

Bean Bag Survey Results

October 14, 2012 at 8:09 pm | Posted in furniture, surveys | Comments Off on Bean Bag Survey Results

This fall, we added more bean bag seating in more color choices and then asked you to tell us your favorites.  More than 70 students took the survey and the top three choices in seating are:

  • The Dorm Chair
  • The Lumin
  • The Fatboy

(check out all the choices here) and the top color choice is Neon/Bright, although almost half of the respondents said that comfort is more important than color.  Watch for additional seating based on your survey opinions to arrive at the library over the next few months.  Remember the big advantage to the bean bag seating is you can take it anywhere you want in the library, on any level, in any area.  Be comfortable wherever you sit at Galvin Library.

New Art Exhibit: Tactile Encounters

October 4, 2012 at 5:16 pm | Posted in art@iit, events | Comments Off on New Art Exhibit: Tactile Encounters

Tactile Encounters: the Influence and Appearance of Texture is a new art exhibit in Galvin Library’s Kemper Room, located on the upper level.  Opening October 4, 2012, the IIT student organization Small Room Curators has brought together artists from FUSEDChicago, a midwest group that works in the encaustic arts.  Encaustic is from the Greek language (to heat or burn) and found in their ancient culture.  Each piece is created using colored wax that is fused to a surface by heat, and each layer is applied, then heated to fuse it to the previous layer.  More than 20 artists have contributed pieces to the show for a wide variety of color and style.  The show will run through November 16, 2012.
