Doing Research on Companies and Industries (for a grade or a job!)

November 12, 2013 at 8:07 pm | Posted in news | Comments Off on Doing Research on Companies and Industries (for a grade or a job!)

Company Industry Research - Business Economics - Research Guides at Illinois Institute of TechnologyDoing research on companies can be a daunting task. Are they publicly traded with lots of stock and investor information available or are they privately held with little or no information out there to find? Is the industry research, with market reports and forecasting trends easily accessible or is the industry a great big secret? Starting with Google when doing company and industry research will result in tens of thousands of commercial sites and bad results, so where do YOU find what you need?

Galvin Library subscribes to many databases that contain information ranging from market reports to SWOT* analyses, from forecasting surveys to industry reports. Librarians have created a research guide  to assist your search and let you get started on your own to find the online resources you need. This guide will take you deeper than a Google or Bing search by sharing tips for searching in the library’s subscription databases, databases which contain information NOT freely available on the web, but available to you as a current student. Still not finding what you need and not sure if we have it? Ask a librarian and get pointed in the right direction to the database you need.

Getting ready to graduate and worrying more about a job than that last research project? Use the company and industry research guide to find out the information that will set you apart from the other job seekers in the room. Arm yourself with knowledge about the industry, profits/losses, competitors and more about the company you interview with. The purpose of the guide is to help you quickly and easily find company and industry information so that you can have a purposeful conversation when interviewing.

Like what you see on the company and industry research guide? Use all our guides created for majors, specific courses, and other topics such as citation management, IIT’s digital repository, and many more.

Soon to Be Famous Illinois Author Project

November 11, 2013 at 9:59 pm | Posted in news | Comments Off on Soon to Be Famous Illinois Author Project

Case of the Royal LeperDr. Bruce Briley has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in academia as well as the business world. In addition to being an adjunct professor in IIT’s Armour College of Engineering for more than 25 years, and the first recipient of the Alva C. Todd Professorship, he’s worked for companies such as Western Electric, International Harvester Research, Bell Labs and Motorola. He holds twenty-one U.S. patents, has introduced eight new courses at IIT, and he writes Sherlock Holmes mysteries. Wait. What?

When not teaching students about fiber optics, Dr. Briley spends some of his free time researching and writing Sherlock Holmes mysteries. After writing two nonfiction books he was inspired to try his hand at fiction after “a visit to London some time ago, where I viewed some of Sherlock’s old haunts still faithful to the era. That, combined with a life-long admiration for Conan-Doyle’s writing, caused a plot to crystallize.”

The result was The Case of the Lost Folio, the first book in Briley’s Forbidden Adventures series. Three other books followed: The Case of the Sow’s Ear, The Case of the Royal Leper and The Case of the Vatican Murder. When asked how many books he plans to write for the series he replied “At present, I’ve set a goal of a baker’s dozen.” Moving him closer to that goal is the yet unpublished The Case of Something Rotten in Denmark. A single book takes six months or more to create. Explains Dr. Briley: “For Holmes books, to approach realism, it’s necessary to research history and settings as the world was some 130 years or so ago, and that is time-consuming, especially if Sherlock decides to do a lot of traveling. Usually, I sit down in front of a keyboard in the evening for an hour or so before retiring. Sometimes I outline, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I put pen to paper instead. It depends.”

However he does it, Dr. Briley certainly has been busy! His latest projects include a non-Sherlock Homes book, a play and “research on an electromagnetic solution to the Emerald Ash Borer beetle problem, which has potential for solving problems with other Arthropods: the Southern Pine Beetle, The Mountain Pine Beetle, the Longhorn Beetle, etc., that are ravaging forests in the US and elsewhere.”

Galvin Library is working with Dr. Briley to submit his latest title to the Soon to Be Famous Illinois Author Project which is seeking to find a self-published Illinois author with an adult fiction book that all of the libraries in Illinois can help to make “famous.” Dr. Briley’s Forbidden Adventures series is currently published in electronic form only and can be purchased through Amazon.

Research Help Available – Your Way!

iStock_000000743945MediumYou’ve received a research assignment – paper or project, individual or group work, and now you are faced with a decision. Procrastinate, search Google at 2 a.m. and hand in mediocre work or use library resources, including expert researchers, and hand in a top-notch effort that dazzles the instructor.  Research help is available and you can choose your own way to using library resources.

Librarians
Librarians are expert researchers who know the best sources for you to use and they are available for individual consultations to help you with any aspect of your research, from research papers to theses and dissertation research. You can find librarians in the Research Help Office (RHO) on the second floor of Galvin Library or you can make an appointment for uninterrupted time. Librarians have Masters Degrees in Library and Information Science, which means they are experts at helping students discover, evaluate and use information. Find librarian schedules in the RHO or make an appointment.

• Student Research Specialists
On evenings and weekends the RHO is staffed with peer-tutors known as Research Specialists. They are undergraduate or graduate students who are familiar with library resources, but the real benefit of meeting with research specialists is that they have done many of the same assignments as you, and know the requirements of instructors. This is an excellent option for any student who may be busy during the day and cannot meet with a librarian. Schedules for these students can also be found at by selecting the Visit the RHO option on the Ask a Librarian page.

• Online
When it’s too cold or rainy to walk from one building to the next, you can instant message, email, or even text message the library with your questions.  We are famous for our quick response times. You can reach us online and its your choice of text, IM, email or phone.

• On your own
Of course, IIT students are known for their independent critical thinking skills, so if you’re the DIY type, you should use our online Research Guides. Galvin Library has more than 100 subscription databases and these guides identify which of the databases will be the best for your topic.  The guides will provide you with search methods, evaluation tips, and much more because they were created by our librarians. So you get the expert advice, but don’t have to come to the library. The guides are perfect when you want to do that 2:00 AM Google search.

Galvin Library is here to help you with your research, and can assist with your academic and professional goals!
