Many of you have seen the new furniture because it’s been here for a few weeks now, but after the September 25th dedication of the 2013 Student Gift, we can officially announce that the new furniture on the upper level, purchased from funds given by the 2013 Student Gift, has arrived!

There are new square tables and chairs on wheels, new soft seats with privacy backs, a tablet arm and they’re on wheels, and there is a new high-top table with high chairs for a different type of seating option. Anything on wheels can be configured or moved to a spot of your choosing. Like to sit at the end of the shelves and look out the windows? Just move tables and chairs to suit your liking. Like to sit in the open northeast? Pull up a few chairs and a table and get comfortable.

Another purchase we made, while not technically furniture, but very useful, is what we call “power towers” and you will too! They are short, maybe just knee-high, but they allow you to plug-in multiple devices in the electrical sockets and USB ports provided. While small and seemingly mobile, the power towers should NOT be moved. However, we do plan to buy more so keep an eye out for their late fall arrival. There is also additional furniture still on order that should arrive before finals.

The staff of the Paul V. Galvin Library would like to thank the Student Gift Committee and Institutional Advancement for all their support to bring the 2013 Student Gift to Galvin Library.  Now we invite the Illinois Tech community to stop by, and move a few chairs around before finding the spot just for you!

What’s Wrong with this Picture?

new chairs_table_white boards_2013new chair_green_2013new_wedges_KI_2013trial furniture_agati_2013Galvin Library has brand new furniture and there’s no one sitting in it! We’ve seen the need for more seating and collaborative study spaces as we watch you  circle the library looking for a place to land. We’ve taken down unneeded shelving and purchased colorful seating options that will allow you to configure a space to suit your needs. The tables nest together, the chairs are on wheels, the white boards are on wheels and are magnetic so you can “build” a space, and the colorful wedges allow you to sit, put your feet up, or put a few together for a horizontal  resting place.

The beautiful white leather furniture at the top of the stairs is on a 30-day trial which will end on May 10. We really would like to know what you think of the trial furniture, as well as the new furniture that we purchased. Should we buy more? Is it comfortable? Do you like the colors? We really want to know what you think. You can comment here at the blog, leave us a comment on our facebook page (, or shoot us at quick email at

But please, come and give it a try. It looks lonely all by itself.

Bean Bag Survey Results

October 14, 2012 at 8:09 pm | Posted in furniture, surveys | Comments Off on Bean Bag Survey Results

This fall, we added more bean bag seating in more color choices and then asked you to tell us your favorites.  More than 70 students took the survey and the top three choices in seating are:

  • The Dorm Chair
  • The Lumin
  • The Fatboy

(check out all the choices here) and the top color choice is Neon/Bright, although almost half of the respondents said that comfort is more important than color.  Watch for additional seating based on your survey opinions to arrive at the library over the next few months.  Remember the big advantage to the bean bag seating is you can take it anywhere you want in the library, on any level, in any area.  Be comfortable wherever you sit at Galvin Library.

More Scanners, More Tables, More Power

Galvin Library is pleased to announce improvements to technology, space and services.

  • Technology: two new scanners have been added to the upper level computing area, bringing Galvin Library’s total availability for scanners to ten.  Eight are located on the upper level, and two scanners can be found on the lower level in the group study area.
  • Space: visit our upper level to see newly refinished tables on the north end. Oak tables original to the building have been sent out for repair and refinishing. With a few tables left to finish in the first phase of the project, patrons are already enjoying the beauty and durability of these study tables. During Spring Break, three shelf ranges on the upper level were removed and three of the new refinished tables that can accommodate up to twelve patrons were moved into place.  There are accessible electric outlets in this new study space located just to the west of the public computing area on the upper level.
  • Services: table-top lamps and power strips have been available to check out at the reference desk on the upper level for a few semesters. Recently, increased demand has made it necessary for additional lamps and power strips to be added. A student ID is necessary to use this service.

Students lounging on FatboysFatboys have arrived at Galvin Library. Have you seen one? Sat on one? Lounged on one? Water and stain resistant, better than a bean bag. Hip, modern design by Finnish designer Jukka Setälä. Drag one to your favorite study spot in the library, connect to the library wireless network, and you’re all set to study for Finals!
