Are you an international student new to IIT? You can learn about the services and resources at Galvin Library by attending the Fundamentals for New International Students sessions. With a full tour of the library building, our international student services librarian, Yi Han, will tell you everything you need to know that can get you started including:

  • how to search and find books in the libraryfundamentals
  • where are my textbooks
  • how to reserve a study room
  • where to find articles

When: Wednesday, January 14

  • English session @ 12:50 pm

Where: Library Learning Center (LLC) on the lower level of Galvin Library.

Schedule a research appointment with a librarian and receive specialized help with your research.  Librarians can assist you with any level and any type of research you need to do.  Appointments can last from 15 minutes to an hour.  Email rho@iit.edu to make an appointment and move forward to completion.

New Student Library Tours

The first few weeks of the semester is one of the busiest times of the year, especially for new students.  You will be getting lots of homework, meeting new friends, and exploring Chicago.  Galvin Library has services that can help students work more efficiently, and there are great spaces for groups and quiet study.  We are giving tours and teaching the basics of using the library, so come by and learn about the library and the services offered.  The Cherry Conference Room is located on Galvin Library’s lower level.  Tours will be offered during the following times:

Library Tour for New Students:

  • Thursday, August 21 at 1:30 p.m. Tour lasts less than 30 minutes. Location: Lobby

Library Fundamentals for New International Students: 

  • Friday, August 22 at 11:30 a.m. Session lasts approximately 45 minutes. Location: Cherry Conference Room
  • Friday, August 22 at 1:00 p.m. Session lasts approximately 45 minutes. Location: Cherry Conference Room
  • Friday, August 22 at 3:00 p.m. 中文 Session lasts approximately 45 minutes. Location: Cherry Conference Room
    *Note : the 3:00 p.m. session is in Mandarin Chinese

Library Orientation for New Students

Are you a new student at IIT?  Learn how to use the library with our Librarian Yi Han.  She will tell you everything you need to know that can get you started including:

  • how to search and find books in our library
  • how to use interlibrary loan and borrow from other libraries
  • how to reserve a study room
  • where to find articles

The library orientation will be offered two times, Tuesday August 28th and Wednesday August 29th from 12:50 pm to 1:20 pm.  Meet in the Library Learning Center, which is located in Galvin Library on the lower level, just past the circulation desk.  Library Map  Let us know you are coming by registering at http://tiny.cc/74kgjw  Registering is useful for our preparation, but is not required.

Galvin Library offers classes throughout the year on using library resources.  See our blog post on how to add the Galvin Library calendar of classes and events to your list of Google calendars.  Remember you can always get help, any time with any question, by contacting us through email, phone, IM or just stop by the Research Help Office, located on the upper level at the top of the main stairwell.

We have a new Research Guide explaining how to find articles, thanks to our International Student Library Services Liaison Yi Han. You’ll find the guide, along with tons of other helpful guides, on our Quick Tips & Tutorials page. The Finding Journals and Articles guide is, you guessed it, under the Finding Journals and Articles section. The guide contains the following information: find articles on your reading list, find articles on a topic, important search tips, getting the full text, and cool database functions.

If you’re feeling stuck or want help finding articles be sure to stop by the Research Help Office on the upper level of Galvin, or Ask the Library.

On Wednesday, March 23rd, we had a class on how to search smarter, not harder. Because these skills are so important, there is now have a Research Guide for searching smart! Check out the Search Smart -Not Hard guide here.
