Public Safety Escort – Location Change for Spring Break

March 13, 2015 at 2:50 pm | Posted in hours, services | Comments Off on Public Safety Escort – Location Change for Spring Break

IITalert_640x170During Spring Break, March 15-March 22, Galvin Library is not open 24 hours, but Public Safety will still be offering its escort service. However, the van driver will offer rides to students who are at Farr Hall (33rd and Michigan) for pickup.

Please make sure you are familiar with the NEW Public Safety Escort Policy. Under the new policy off-campus security van escorts start from a central pick-up point and are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. During Spring Break instead of the usual pick-up locations, the van will leave Farr Hall (33rd and Michigan) at regular intervals from 7 p.m.–3 a.m. On-campus escorts to dorms and parking lots can call 312.808.6310.

4 Ways We Can Help YOU!

November 24, 2014 at 7:01 pm | Posted in databases, news, Research Specialists, services | Comments Off on 4 Ways We Can Help YOU!

This week classes meet only Monday and Tuesday, after the weekend starts Study Week, and then Finals’ Week will be here. Maybe you’re all caught up on your assignments, but if you still have some work to do, consider the ways that Galvin Library can help:

Librarians
Stop by the Research Help Office on the second floor of Galvin from 10am to 4pm Monday through Friday and from 12pm to 4pm Sunday to meet with a friendly librarian. Librarians have Masters Degrees,  meaning they are experts at helping students discover, evaluate and use information. The office is private so you will feel comfortable asking questions.

Research Specialists
On evenings and weekends the Research Help Office is staffed with peer-tutors known as Research Specialists. They are highly trained and specially selected upper level student leaders at IIT. They have done many of the same assignments as you, and can help you find the sources they know professors want to see. They have also been trained to assist with your writing questions, and meeting with one of these students is an excellent option for anyone who may be busy during the day when the Writing Center is open.

Online
When it’s too cold to walk from one building to the next, or you’re out of town on holiday, you can instant message, email, or even text message us your questions. You can also search one of our many subscription databases with peer-reviewed journals. We are famous for our quick response times. Reach us online at library.iit.edu/ask.

On Your Own
For the DIY student, use our online Research Guides at library.iit.edu/subjects. These guides identify which of the more than 100 databases Galvin subscribes to will be the best for your topic. It provides you with search methods, evaluation tips, and much more.

New copier/scanners are on both upper and lower levels.

Come check out the new fancy, schmancy color copiers in the Galvin Library. There’s one each on the upper and lower levels. Not only can they make color copies, but if you save the file to your flash drive, it’s free!

That’s right: when you chose the “Scanning” option, you can connect your USB storage device to the copier and save your scans at no charge.

To make normal printed copies, you must purchase a copy card from the tower on the lower level. Color copies cost $.40 per page; black and white copies are still $.10 per page.

Students, faculty and staff need convenient access to the university’s technology support staff and services and the new location in Galvin Library will allow OTS to better meet this need.

The OTS Support Desk will continue to provide online, telephone and in-person service to the university community. Stop by and visit the new space, located on the upper level near the main stairway, and right next door to the elevator. All other means of contacting the Support Desk will remain the same:

Website: support.iit.edu
Email: supportdesk@iit.edu
Telephone: 312.567.3375 or on-campus extension: 7-DESK

We look forward to continuing to serve the IIT community in our new home. Questions about the move may be directed to supportdesk@iit.edu.
