uncle samWe are taking part in the LibQual survey this spring Semester.  More than 1000 libraries around the world have taken the survey offered by the Association of Research Libraries, and now we are asking the Illinois Tech community to participate too.  By taking the survey, you will give the library useful feedback we can apply to our services, collections, and space–now and in the years to come.  The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete.

Access the Survey

You will have an opportunity to win one of four (4) $25 Amazon gift certificates.  Enter your Illinois Institute of Technology email address at the end of the survey to be included in the drawing.

The survey is available for all students, faculty and staff.  Responses are confidential; any identifying information will be removed.  Are you a survey geek and what to know more about the methodology used for LibQual?

As always if you have any questions, contact us through email, IM, phone or stop by the Research Help Office on the upper level.

User Study Feb 8-21

2013-09-13 GeeMixGalvin Library will be conducting a study on our library users, both online users and those who physically enter the building, between February 8th-21st. During this period, at selected times throughout the day, we will be asking students who enter the building to scan their ID, and those using the Research Help Office (RHO) will be asked as well. We will also be using server data to view usage of online resources. This survey will help the library identify its users in order to better meet our students’ needs by creating new programs, enhancing spaces, and to determine whether intensity of library usage has an effect on student retention. Student IDs will be aggregated, and the survey is confidential and voluntary, so you can opt out at any time. If you have any questions about this survey, contact the principle investigator, Lisa Massengale, at lmasseng@iit.edu or 312.567.3373.

What’s Wrong with this Picture?

new chairs_table_white boards_2013new chair_green_2013new_wedges_KI_2013trial furniture_agati_2013Galvin Library has brand new furniture and there’s no one sitting in it! We’ve seen the need for more seating and collaborative study spaces as we watch you  circle the library looking for a place to land. We’ve taken down unneeded shelving and purchased colorful seating options that will allow you to configure a space to suit your needs. The tables nest together, the chairs are on wheels, the white boards are on wheels and are magnetic so you can “build” a space, and the colorful wedges allow you to sit, put your feet up, or put a few together for a horizontal  resting place.

The beautiful white leather furniture at the top of the stairs is on a 30-day trial which will end on May 10. We really would like to know what you think of the trial furniture, as well as the new furniture that we purchased. Should we buy more? Is it comfortable? Do you like the colors? We really want to know what you think. You can comment here at the blog, leave us a comment on our facebook page (Facebook.com/GalvinLibraryIIT), or shoot us at quick email at library@iit.edu

But please, come and give it a try. It looks lonely all by itself.

Finals Week at Galvin Library

Participate in the Galvin Library Student Advisory Board and you can make the library a better place for yourself and others!  The Paul V. Galvin Library is committed to enriching and enhancing the educational experience for students and to that end we are establishing a Student Advisory Board.  We would like your input on policies, services, collections, and spaces, and we welcome volunteers to serve.  The board will be comprised of 8-12 undergraduate and graduate students from various disciplines who will meet a few times each semester to:

• provide feedback and insight on library services, collections, and spaces
• help identify trends in the student use of services and resources
• participate in the development of surveys or focus groups
• assist in decision-making that will affect the student body

In the past Galvin Library has listened to our students and we have added:

• A quiet study zone
• Increased vending options
• More soft and comfortable seating
• Night Owl Lab
• Study Week, an additional week of 24 hour access on both levels

Now we want to find out what you think! If you are interested in participating, send us an email at library@iit.edu, write “Student Advisory Board” in the subject line and tell us three things:

• Your student status (undergraduate level freshman – 5th year or graduate)
• Major or intended course of study
• Why you would like to serve on the student advisory board

Please submit your email of interest to library@iit.edu by February 1st.  Board members will be notified by Tuesday, February 12.

Bean Bag Survey Results

October 14, 2012 at 8:09 pm | Posted in furniture, surveys | Comments Off on Bean Bag Survey Results

This fall, we added more bean bag seating in more color choices and then asked you to tell us your favorites.  More than 70 students took the survey and the top three choices in seating are:

  • The Dorm Chair
  • The Lumin
  • The Fatboy

(check out all the choices here) and the top color choice is Neon/Bright, although almost half of the respondents said that comfort is more important than color.  Watch for additional seating based on your survey opinions to arrive at the library over the next few months.  Remember the big advantage to the bean bag seating is you can take it anywhere you want in the library, on any level, in any area.  Be comfortable wherever you sit at Galvin Library.
