Finding Your Textbooks

August 23, 2014 at 12:56 am | Posted in textbooks | Comments Off on Finding Your Textbooks

Undergraduate textbooks are available for use inside the library for two hours at a time. You need to bring the call number of the textbook you want to use to the Circulation Desk on the lower level. There are two fast and simple ways to find the call numbers of your textbooks.

1. If you know the course number: go to http://library.iit.edu/reserves and search by course number to see a complete list of books.

Enter your course number to find a list of textbooks for the course.

2. If you only know the name of the textbook: enter the title in the search box on our homepage. Choose to search by title and click search. You can write down the call number from the main catalog screen. There is also an option to text yourself the call number, which is a great way to ensure you’ll have the correct number with you.

tip: write the call number on your syllabus so you don’t have to look it up again.

Click on the title to learn more about the specific book, such as the edition number.

a status of ‘available’ or ‘recently checked in’ means the book can be used. Books already in use will list the time they are due.

To learn more, watch this short video, read this quick PDF or see our textbook policies. If you tried both methods and still can’t find the call numbers you need, ask us!

Free Color Copying in the Library? (Sort of)

New copier/scanners are on both upper and lower levels.

Come check out the new fancy, schmancy color copiers in the Galvin Library. There’s one each on the upper and lower levels. Not only can they make color copies, but if you save the file to your flash drive, it’s free!

That’s right: when you chose the “Scanning” option, you can connect your USB storage device to the copier and save your scans at no charge.

To make normal printed copies, you must purchase a copy card from the tower on the lower level. Color copies cost $.40 per page; black and white copies are still $.10 per page.

The 2011 Student Gift Committee announced in April that
based on responses to a January survey, the overwhelming
choice by voters was to donate this year’s class gift to the
Galvin Library’s Reserve Textbooks Collection.

The committee has set two goals for this year’s campaign.  They
would like to:

  •    receive 300 gifts from undergraduate students
  •    have 30% participation from the graduating class

Help them reach their goals!

Looking for Your Textbooks?

January 8, 2010 at 10:32 pm | Posted in textbooks | Comments Off on Looking for Your Textbooks?

Spring semester is upon us, and it’s time to start tracking down your textbooks.  Galvin Library is working with the bookstore to make sure a copy of every textbook is on reserve for undergraduate students during the spring 2010 semester. Textbooks that are owned by Galvin Library are kept in the library’s Course Reserves collection, which is located behind the circulation desk on the lower level.  Reserve books can only be checked out for two hours at a time and cannot be taken out of the library. This ensures that they are available to as many students as possible.

To borrow a reserve textbook, you will need the call number of the text so staff at the circulation desk can retrieve your item.  You can find the call number by searching for your books on the Course Reserves page by course number or instructor name.  This video shows you how to search for textbooks.

Read our textbook policies for more information.

Looking For Your Textbooks?

If you need a copy of a textbook to take home to your dorm room or apartment, you’ll need to purchase it from the campus bookstore or from another source. The library does not provide circulating copies of textbooks for students. The Galvin Library collection is intended to provide materials for scholarly research and to supplement classroom learning.

The library may have a copy of your textbook, but if so, it has been placed in the Reserve Collection, located behind the Circulation Desk on the Lower Level of the library. Reserve books can only be checked out for two hours at a time and cannot be removed from the library. This ensures they are available to as many students as possible during the semester they are assigned. Books owned by the Library which are later adopted as class textbooks will be transferred to the Reserve Collection during the time they are assigned for class use.

Textbooks are also not available via Interlibrary Loan (ILL). If you place an ILL request for a textbook via I-Share or WorldCat, it will be canceled by library staff. To prevent the loss of valuable study time, please consider purchasing a new or used textbook.

To search for Reserve titles, use the IIT Library Catalog. Items on Reserve will have a location of “Galvin Reserves (IIT-Local Circulating Only)” in the item record. To borrow these items, bring the call number to the Circulation Desk on the lower level. Again,  Reserve books can only be checked out for two hours at a time and cannot be removed from the library.
